It’s October and the fall season is here. That means Halloween candy and Pumpkin Spice Lattes are ready to be enjoyed – and ready to attack your teeth! While it’s perfectly fine to help yourself to these fall treats, remember that moderation is the key to keeping a healthy smile. Here’s why:
Halloween Candy
We all know eating too much candy is bad for teeth. Eating too many sugary foods and candies can lead to cavities, which if left untreated can mean pain and tooth-loss. Try and minimize the time candy spends in your mouth and candy that causes wear and tear on your teeth. Avoid hard to chew and sour candies and substitute them with dark chocolate, which is a healthier candy option.
If you are more of a treater than a trickster, consider handing out healthy options like pretzels, mini water bottles, and sugar-free gum to all the goblins and ghouls that come calling.
Pumpkin Spice lattes
Pumpkin Spice lattes are delicious, but they are also loaded with sugar, and that sugar coats your teeth every time you take a drink. Pumpkin Spice lattes are also, of course coffee, which stains teeth. So, limit your Pumpkin Spice lattes and rinse with water every time you finish one.
Also, ask your barista for healthier options when it comes to your daily coffee intake. Not only would it benefit your teeth, it would benefit your body as well.
Practicing Proper Oral Health Care
Caring for your teeth is simple even if you find yourself overindulging in sweets this month. Remember these three simple rules and you’ll be able to keep your healthy smile for years to come:
-
Brush at least twice a day.
-
Floss daily.
-
Visit your dentist regularly.
